Getting to Tioman Island from Singapore is a 2-part journey that starts with overland transfer from Singapore to Mersing Jetty (or Tanjung Gemok Jetty) where you can take a ferry to Tioman Island.

Step 2: Ferry To Tioman Island From Tanjung Gemok Or Mersing Jetty

At Mersing Jetty or Tanjung Gemok, you can board the Bluewater Express or Cataferry ferry service.

The crossing takes 1.5 hours to 2 hours.

Tips:

  1. The ferries from Tanjung Gemok Jetty to Tioman Island tend to be on time compared to those departing from Mersing Jetty!
  2. Cataferry offers 2 additional piers – Mukut Jetty or Juara Jetty on Tioman Island.
  3. To get your tickets ahead of Malaysian and Singaporean public holidays (or school holidays), book your ferry tickets online!
  4. Take heed of which Tioman Island pier you have to alight from! Hint: Whichever is closest to your hotel!

1.2 Bus To Tioman Island From Singapore

Buses are a very affordable means to get to the ferry jetties.

Just be aware that you have to alight from the bus (and get on again) for immigration clearance between Singapore and Johor.

Step 1: Bus To Mersing Jetty Or Tanjung Gemok Jetty From Singapore

There are numerous bus services from Singapore to Tioman Island. You can either choose to leave before dawn or take an overnight bus for the 3 to 4 hour-long journey.

Most of the buses stop at Mersing Jetty or Mersing Bus Terminal which is a short walk from Mersing Jetty.

So you may have to take a ~20-minute taxi up to Tanjung Gemok Jetty from Mersing if that is your chosen departure point.

Tips:

  1. Pack a jacket, snacks and some water for the ride!
  2. Make sure you keep your tickets and passport with you.

Step 2: Ferry To Tioman Island From Tanjung Gemok Or Mersing Jetty (Bus)

Ferries departing from either jetty may not always be on time so do try to plan your journey so that you arrive with at least 1.5 hours to spare before the stated departure time!

 

2. Getting Around Tioman Island

Tioman Island has some basic infrastructure especially in the main village, Tekek Village but no real roads.

So the most common way of getting around is motorcycle or a water taxi if you need to get to another side of the island!

3. Best Time To Visit Tioman Island

Aside from the monsoon season (November to February), Tioman Island is usually a sunny place!

The water is clearest during the middle of the year (May to September) with July being the peak!

Naturally, this will be the time that most visitors come to the island too!

  1. Tekek To Air Batang (ABC) – Takes ~1 hour one-way and from ABC, you can continue on to Monkey Beach and even Salang Village
  2. Tekek To Juara – 2 to 3 hours one-way of moderate difficulty. Possible to detour to Ali’s Waterfall.
